Lighting glass
As many of you know, this past May I graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts degree, magna cum laude, from LIU Post. Well, a few short weeks later I was offered a teaching position at a local 4 year college. I will be teaching Advanced Photography as a part of the design curriculum. I am absolutely thrilled!! With the start of the semester just 4 short weeks away, I thought it'd be a good time to nail down my lesson plan. (Not last minute at all). I've decided that posting my progression would be beneficial, plus you guys get to see whats going on in my life :)
Over the next few weeks I will continue to post my lessons. I've decided that since this is a design program, my photos will be based on photography as it pertains to design, or keeping design in mind.
Topic 1 - Photographing Glass (One light)
My basic set up is pictured on the right.
Below are the results.
First I started with a single glass, progressed to three glasses, then went back to the single glass and added food coloring for some extra "umph."
I wanted my students to be able to practice this at home, so it was important to see if I would be able to create the effect without the use of a strobe, and instead with the simple use of a diffused table lamp or something similar. The result was this really beautiful golden hue, which can later be adjusted in Lightroom, should you choose to. Below, both are pictured - the original golden hue image (which I LOVE), and the corrected image next to it. I set it on a highly reflective surface to create the mirror image underneath the glass.
From here I thought it would be pretty cool to add in a splash. I made a TOTAL MESS in the studio, but I had fun while creating an AWESOME image and THAT is the important part.
Everything after this point became a variation of the splash. Keep in mind that all of these were created MOSTLY in camera. (I would say about 95%) I did make some minor edits in Lightroom, mostly vignetting, a bit of clarity, and saturation, but that's about it. The results are below.

Walking Dead Inspired Shoot
As many of you know I have just completed my graduate degree a few short weeks ago. It was an absolute GREAT run!! Nearing the end of my last semester, I needed a bit of a break from my thesis work. As my professors would say, I needed to "get out and play."
I had a couple of days left on a Profoto B1 Location Kit rental from BorrowedLenses.com and I wanted to take advantage of it as much as I could. With that in mind, I called up a good friend of mine, Greg Fedele, who by the way is an AMAZING CONTRACTOR (enter shameless plug) as well as an excellent model. Greg is always eager to do some art and is a great model to work with.
We had both been talking about doing a Walking Dead inspired shoot, and with the profoto lights, it was our opportunity to do just that. These photos are taken in my current home town, Northport (where being an artist is AWESOME).
I had a hard time deciding between the full color photographs and the slightly less saturated ones, so I included both. Hope you guys enjoy! :)
